On the eve before the inaugural Kimberley parkrun event, I had the privilege of having dinner with Jaco van der Walt, parkrun tourist extra-ordinaire, among other amazing people. I was a nervous wreck: I'd barely slept or eaten for a week straight, and I secretly wondered what on earth possessed me to saddle up such a crazy horse. I don't remember much of the conversation around the dinner table that evening, but I do remember Jaco's parting words: "Your life is about to change forever".
And now, 52 weeks later, I can't help but smile. Thinking back over the past year both humbles and astounds me: The elation of a growing event and a shared passion; teeth-chattering -4-degree mornings in the company of cheerful new friends; and the joy of being able to do what I love in my own home town. But, most of all, I remember the people: Friendly, new faces who have since become friends; the laughs; the enthusiasm; and experiencing first-hand the warmth and kindness in so many hearts.
"It's -4 degrees outside! And I have a cone on my head! Yay!" |
Jaco was right: My life will never be the same again. It's forever been enriched by so many wonderful people, and through the privilege of being a part of their inspirational journeys.
We celebrated our first year in true parkrun style: With a run. Followed by a fun, laid-back birthday party marked by enthusiasm and help from so many - I was blown away once again.
