Going Green

I've taken the plunge.  I closed my eyes, grabbed a handful of (uncooked) spinach, and blended it into my beloved chocolate peanut butter smoothie.  The latter which has morphed into a not-so-appetising, brownish-green slush as a result...

Since being diagnosed with very low iron levels a few weeks back, I've been working hard on upping my iron intake.  But despite taking a supplement and eating more nuts, nut butters, red meat and spinach than you can ever imagine (coupled with foods high in Vitamin C for improved iron absorption), I was still feeling meh.  I needed a Plan B.

Enter my experiment with green smoothies.  I've seen them all over the Internet, but I've never had the guts to actually make one.  Or rather, I've never felt the need.  But now I do and guess what?  I love them!  I drink one with my breakfast every, single morning (=more spinach than I would ever have ingested the traditional way) and I feel much, much better!

I warned you about the colour, ha!  I'm sure it will be a brighter, more appetising green if you leave the cocoa out of the recipe, but I believe that cocoa (among other things) makes the world go 'round, so mine is staying put.

Be warned that green smoothies are definitely not everybody's cup of tea, though.  Will took one sip and said it tasted "healthy" (Will-speak for "please don't bring that concoction near me ever again"), and Baby Girl ran away the first few times I asked her if she wanted a sip.  So there.  (This morning she gave it a try, though - and couldn't get enough!)

Pardon our PJ's :) .

I love my green smoothies.  I can literally feel it helping my body, and I will definitely continue drinking them even after Brother Bear's birth.  Perhaps it will even help me crush that elusive sub-50 10 k...?  (A girl can dream, right?)

Try it if you dare!

  1. Green smoothies are the best! I can't even tell there's spinach or kale in them.

Look at baby girl! She's getting so big!

    1. I agree - you can't even taste the spinach. So glad I gave it a try!

  2. I was also apprehensive about trying them but now am hooked! Once I tried adding kale and it is not the same, I couldn't finish that one, so I stick to spinach and my kids will drink them too. BONUS!

    1. I've tried mine with spinach and Swiss chard, and both taste great. Thanks for the kale warning - I might give that one a skip then ;) !

  3. Baby girl is something of special!!!
I eat a lot of spinach (and many other vegetables) they help to be healthy.

I love hearing from you!
