African Organics Review and Giveaway

African Organics was kind enough to send me some products* to test and review, plus they threw in a big treat for one lucky Running the Race reader**: A product hamper filled with African Organics products to try out and enjoy!  Simply follow the instructions at the end of this post, and the winner could be you!

Who or what is African Organics?

"African Organics is a holistic hair and body care range designed to bring Africa's most powerful plant ingredients to you, while at the same time contributing to the well-being of Africa's rural communities and its natural heritage" (Source).  Not convinced?  Have a look at this:  African Organics products...

• Are approved by Phytotrade Africa, a visionary Fair Trade initiative that promotes community projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
• Adhere to both BDIH (Germany) and Ecocert France standards for 100% natural products.
• Are endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty.  No products are tested on animals, plus no raw materials are sourced from suppliers that use animal testing.
• Are rapidly biodegradable and are therefore anticipated to contribute to the health of South Africa's watercourses.
• Contain no animal ingredients, plus all products are vegan-friendly and endorsed by the Vegan Society of South Africa.

African Organics use no synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic colourants in any of their products.  In addition, they are committed to not making use of parabens, petrochemicals, sulphated surfactants, animal products, ethoxylated or PEG ingredients, propylene glycol or any other ingredients red-flagged by BDIH and Ecocert (source).

My verdict

I love these products and will definitely keep on using it.  My personal favourites are the shampoo and body wash: It left my hair and skin feeling pampered and nourished after each use and the fact that it is 100% natural, is a definite plus in my books.  I found the body lotion to be ideal for everyday use: Not too rich, and not leaving your skin feeling dry and tight either.  The hand lotion kept even my super dry hands comfortably moisturised when applied after each hand wash and the hair conditioner gave my hair just that extra bit of care, without weighing it down.

Note that these products are not characterised by the flowery or fruity scents usually associated with body care products.  Instead, it is marked by a natural, forest-y smell that I found very natural and appealing, but that Will found "a bit strong".
All in all I found African Organics products to be effective, good quality natural products that are both affordable (retailing at between R35.00 and R45.00 a piece at the time of writing) and easily obtainable [available at Dis-Chem stores throughout South Africa, as well as a number of other speciality health and wellness outlets.  It can also be ordered online (among other places) here, here and here].

One lucky Running the Race reader** stands the chance of winning an African Organics hamper containing a Natural Shampoo, Natural Conditioner, Natural Body Wash and Natural Body Lotion, compliments of African Organics!  Simply leave a comment after this post (be sure to include your name), telling me what you find appealing about the African Organics range after reading this review and that lucky winner could be you!  The winner will be randomly drawn and announced on 26 April 2010 at noon (South African time) - watch this space!

*The following products were tested for the purpose of this review: African Organics Natural Shampoo (Dry/Treated Hair); African Organics Natural Conditioner (All Hair Types); African Organics Natural Body Wash; African Organics Natural Body Lotion; and African Organics Natural Hand Lotion.

  1. I am the first to enter - Jippieee!!!

I like the sound of the smell - the "forest-y smell", as I am definitely not a girly, flowery type of gal. ;-) Your review will definitely make me go buy some and try!

  2. They sound wonderful!!! I love the all natural aspect. Im so tired of putting junk into my hair...I need to pay as much attention to that as I do to food in my body. And the smell of forests over "cool ocean breezes" sounds great also!

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  6. I like the fact that it is proudly African and a foresty smell sounds like something fresh and new to try. And also the fact that no animals were harmed during the making of this product :)

  7. Great!

As a avid recycler these products are exactly what I need. We should all be mindful of what we wash down the drain and throw in the trash. Trash doesn't go away, it keeps piling up somewhere. Thank you for biodegradable products that are not harmful to my family or the environment. Karen Botha.

  8. Wonderfully natural! These products are just what I have been waiting for! As a patient with an immune deficiency reated illness, one becomes very aware of what you put on or in your body....especially when you take as many chemical substances as I do these products will give me peace of mind- my body will be safe- no additional chemicals or preservatives will add to my skin - or systemic problems anymore! Thank you also for giving us the opportunity to work with you and support us to ensure that we don't "use up" our earth !!

  9. I love it that with all the added benefits, it's still affordable!

I love hearing from you!
