We're a week into November and although I kicked off Pile on the Miles with a cold, I still did okay. Here's a reminder of the goals I set for November:
1. Run four times a week (i.e. be consistent in my training); and
2. Gradually (and injury-free!) build my longer runs up to 12 km as a base for half-marathon training, which starts in December.
And here's how I did:
Monday ---> The most glorious beach run ever! A sunny day, six solo kilometres, and a quick, knee-deep dip in the ocean afterwards. I know I say this about almost every second run, but this one truly was perfect.
Tuesday ---> Rest day. I woke up to a sore throat... Ugh. New continent, new germs - who knew? Foam rolled to ease the frustration.
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday ---> I checked, re-checked and checked again whether my cold/flu symptoms were above or below the neck. (Here's why.) In the end, common sense prevailed (while my heart and legs yelled "noooooooo!") and I took three additional (unplanned, this time) rest days. Kindergarten germs suck.
Saturday ---> parkrun! I woke up feeling so much better, and clocked Kiwi parkrun No. 4 in a time of 25:22. It was a perfect, sunny day despite the weatherman predicting doom and gloom - an amazing run!
I walked the 2.2 km to and from parkrun too, taking my distance for the day up to 9.4 km.

Sunday ---> Wow, what a windy day! We eeked out four family kays after a day of exploring and although the run wasn't really one for the books, our excursion definitely was: We stumbled across the Porirua parkrun starting line! We'll be back...

So that's three out of four runs for the week, plus a longer run/walk on Saturday. Nothing to get too excited about, but it is what it is. Fired up [and healthy !!] and ready for Week II!
Happy Monday, everyone!

Shame about your cold hitting just as you start you challenge! But good that you were better for parkrun on Saturday. The beach run looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly, Nicola: I'd rather sit out a few mid-week runs than miss out on parkrun, ha! I'm hooked :) .
DeleteSorry about your sudden cold...but that's reality, isn't it? It sounds like your actual runs went, though ;-)
ReplyDeleteUgh, I honestly think that kindergarten germs are running moms' No. 1 obstacle in terms of consistent training. But such is life, right? But, as you say, at least I had some glorious runs as well!
DeleteYay for ending the week healthy! I got a cold last week too. When the "easy" yoga class felt hard enough, I knew I was right not to run. They've started to have park runs around here - so cool!
ReplyDeleteHave you done a parkrun yet? They're highly addictive!
DeleteHope you're feeling better too. x
Well it looks like your week ended much better! Karien, I'm so glad you joined us for the weekly wrap! We have a great group of ladies! I hope you meet your goals for this week! Have a great one!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Tricia - it's my first time linking up with you and HoHo and I've already met so many wonderful ladies! I will definitely join in again!
DeleteWell done - you did not really let that cold slow you down too much.
ReplyDeleteThankfully it wasn't a long, drawn-out one, Cat. Not being able to run drives me up the walls! ;)
DeleteHope you are over your cold soon! The beach looks like a beautiful and peaceful place to get to run.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christy!
DeleteI just can't get enough of running along that beach :) . It's often rainy and windy there, but on perfect days like Monday there's absolutely no better place to run :) .
Don't you just hate when you set new goals and life get in the way??? I too am just beginning to build back some mileage after an injury for a half coming up in January. Here's hoping the ankle will cooperate and hoping you feel better soon! Beautiful scenery for your runs, by the way!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Teresa! Ugh, it's SO frustrating - I LOATHE kindergarten germs, ha!
DeleteHope your ankle behaves and that your half in January is a huge success!
Welcome to the Weekly Wrap, Karien! I loathe getting a sore throat! All that "try not to swallow but end up swallowing more" nonsense. Congrats on a great parkrun. It would be nice to have those around here! Thanks for linking! I hope to see you back again next week.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Hoho! I've only linked up once, and have already "met" so many incredible women! See you again next week :) .
DeleteGreat picture of you Karien - and I'm envious of your Parkrun time..
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Gordon! Hehe, it took me four weeks of trying to finally get below 26 again...!
