Five ways to stay healthy during the holidays

I love this time of year!  There are so many fun things to do and look forward to: Year-end functions, prize-givings, school concerts, the holidays, and time together with friends and family...  The atmosphere is just different, don't you think?  Unfortunately healthy choices and workouts are often the first to fly out the door when a) schedules get crammed during the year-end rush and b) the holidays finally arrive - I guess it's time to get creative, right?  Here are a few ideas to help you stay on track:

1.  Explore on Foot (or on Two Wheels)

I'm convinced that there's no better way to explore a holiday destination than on foot.  Visiting family or friends in another city?  Go on a running tour, go for a family hike, or rent some bikes and just cruise around.  You'll discover way more than you ever would have in a car and file away some pretty awesome memories in the process too.

Rent a bike and go explore!

2.  Make it Fun

Make your workouts fun and informal: Play in the waves (holiday time = summer time down here in SA, remember?), run around with the kids, or complete a fun run/parkrun together as a family.  The options are endless!

Enter a fun event with family and friends.

3.  Change your Mindset

I'm a no-excuses kind of girl, so to me it's quite simple: Would I want to take a break from feeling and being fit and healthy during the holidays?  Of course not!  Then why would I want to take a break from being active and making healthy choices during the holidays?  The two kinda go together, right...?

4.  Set a New Year's goal

Why not enter a race or event that takes place early in the new year?  Nothing to keep you motivated to train like a paid-up race registration.

5.  Buddy Up

Get a partner in crime: Team up with a fitness buddy and keep each other accountable.  Schedule some fun early-morning or lunchtime workouts - why not try a dance class or two?  And why not end it all off with a healthy breakfast or smoothie date?

Healthy breakfast dates for the win!

    1. Thanks, Coco! That is a wonderful idea. Down here in SA there aren't that many people who go all-out with displays, but certainly one or two worth planning a run around!

  2. I think one of the best ways to explore a new location is by running!

I'm also partial to walking tours -- even better, food walking tours. :)

    1. Down here in SA we have Christmas in summer, so getting sick over the holidays isn't really an issue. It's staying motivated to keep exercising and eating healthy that's a bit more tricky...! :)

  5. Great list. Having fun with it is important. No reason to not stay healthy by going out exploring.

  6. I'm lucky in having a like minded partner who loves to run. One of the first things we do on holiday is work out some running routes, the hillier or more mountainous, the better. We love to run the trails in La Palma, reputedly the most mountainous island in the world for its size.
She's currently in Australia, without me, and emailed a couple of days ago to say she's set a new LV70 age record in the Brisbane Parkrun. That's my girl!
