Calling all runners: Let's pay it forward!

I won this cool little number in an online competition last week...

Nice, right?  But you know what?  I don't really need it.  Sure, it's always fun to try out new running gadgets, but I already have my trusty purple people eater Garmin and I'm convinced that there's a fellow running nut out there who would really love a running watch (even if it's not big-brand or top-of-the-range), but simply cannot afford one.  And that got me thinking...

Why don't we all start spreading the love a little bit?  I'm pretty sure that most of us have at least one piece of running gear or equipment at home that we bought on a whim or won or received as a gift, but never ended up using.  I'm not talking about our worn-out running shoes and holey 1995 cotton race t-shirts - those have made us happy and served its purpose.  I'm talking about new or barely used running stuff that will put a serious hop in an underprivileged runner's step.  Won't you help me?

You can help in one of two ways:

1.  By nominating an awesome, dedicated running nut who would love to experience the joy of receiving and using a funky piece of running gear or equipment, but doesn't have the financial means to do so.  You can send me your nominations, with all the necessary details (their name, address and story) via one of the following channels: Facebook, Twitter, e-mail (find my address here) or by commenting on this post.  (Let's limit this to South African runners for now in order to keep the cost of getting the gear to them as low as possible.)*

2.  Alternatively, you can let me know if you have any new or unused piece of running gear or equipment that you would like to pay forward to an underprivileged runner.  Get in touch via the channels mentioned above, and we'll arrange for your contribution to end up in the right hands.  Feel free to join in if you're living abroad!

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of the constant flood of bad (horrific, actually) news being hurled at us from every possible angle.  Let's spread a few smiles instead - I'll start with my funky new prize watch.  Let me know who needs it.

Soooo tired of all the bad news.  [Source.]

*Obviously I can only distribute what I receive, so just keep in mind that every runner nominated might not receive something.

  1. Great idea, you are very kind to do this. You are right, I won many (for me) unnecessary items during my running life and some of them remained long time in some drawer.

    1. Me too, Stafano, and I'm sure that those things will make a fellow runner out there so happy!

  2. Great idea, I just don't know anyone in South Africa to nominate :) I do enjoy giving away things I have won or bought but don't use to other runners who might like them. No sense in keeping them and wasting drawer space!

    1. I agree, Christy. So many runners have already come back to me and said that they're already spreading the love wherever they are in the world. Love it! :)

  3. What a lovely idea! You're so sweet :)

    1. Awwww, thanks, Lisa :) . I must say that the positive reaction received from sooo many runners from all over just confirmed again what an amazing community the running community is. Honoured to be a part of it!

I love hearing from you!
