My Run to Remember

I love running with the kids - it's one of my favourite things to do.  But yesterday, on Mother's Day, I needed a solo run.  After a crazy few days spent knee-deep in spit-up, diapers and laundry, I needed a breather.  Just for a while.

I lost my mom to brain cancer in 2005.  And some days, like yesterday, it's still pretty hard not to have her around.  Running away is never a solution, but on days like that I find that momentarily escaping the young-family chaos that surrounds me 24/7 helps me to reset.  A proverbial deep breath to clear my head and regroup.

My best friend.

My run was glorious.  I felt light and strong and spent most of the run remembering: The good times, the laughs, the hugs and the love.  But I also ran to mourn the loss and face the emptiness.  And to cry for the memories that will never be.

I returned home tired and thankful.  Thankful for the memories.  And the love.  And ready to, with grace from Above, pass it on to my own children.  Thanks, Mom, for showing me how.

Blessed beyond comprehension to have been yours.

  3. A run like that is certainly the best way to deal with a loss like that. I'm glad you could do it. I'm so blessed to have my mom with us still. She'll be 84 this year.
