My Favourite Everyday Running Stuff

Over the years I've discovered some firm favourites when it comes to running gear.  I've also learnt, though, that running gear is an extremely personal thing: What one person swears by can literally make the next person run for the hills.  This list is therefore not meant to be prescriptive in any way - see it more as a running buddy gushing over running stuff* - like only us runners can ;).

Favourite running shoes:

The Asics Gel Nimbus.  I wear neutral shoes and these are a perfect fit for me.  I'm on my fifth pair now - love them!

Favourite running tights:

I prefer my butt to be covered when I run, and the Nike Women's Running Skapris are fun and feminine too.  Love the zipped back pocket and love the neutral black colour.  I'm currently rotating between three pairs of these - and they last and last and last.

Favourite running top:

I'm not a tank top kind of girl - I prefer fitted ladies' tech T's.  The First Ascent Ladies' Duoflo T is flattering, colourful and just the right length for me.  And it's proudly South African too!

Favourite running gadget:

Love my Garmin 410!  I've had it for a few years now and never once has it died on me (except when I forgot to charge it) or refused to pick up signal.  I rarely run with the heart strap, but love having pace and distance data handy after especially longer runs.

Favourite running socks:

I rarely run with white socks - dark ones are just much more practical (I run off-road a lot)!  The Falke Trail Running Sock is cushioned and comes up just high enough not to be irritating during a run.  Love!

Other things you'll never catch me without on a run is a visor, sunscreen and sunglasses - training under the African sun is definitely not for sissies ;) ...

*This is not a sponsored post.  It's simply a list of everyday running essentials that I've come to love over the years and that work for me.

What's your favourite everyday running stuff?  Any recommendations on a visor (not cap) with an extra-long peak?  I need one!

  1. Snap! Well, on most of the items)... I'm also an asics fan girl and love my Garmin. I really need to give that skapris a try. For me, I cannot run without my blue Nike cap. It's looking a bit skanky now and I'm desperate to replace it but can't find it anywhere. Panic! :-) Great blog.

    1. Thanks, Bo! Ha, I know that feeling of panic - I'm so afraid that they'll stop making my beloved skapris that I usually save up to buy them two or three at a time...! Hope you find a replacement cap soon!

    1. Hurray for Asics :)! When I was in the States in 2010 I bought myself a pair - and was amazed at how cheap they are over there! We pay about double what you pay for them in the U.S. here in S.A., but to me it's still worth every penny ;) .

  3. Great post - it's always fun to see what other runners love. I love Nike running clothing too, and those skapris are very cute, I may have to look into getting a pair!

  4. A good selection there Karien - for women - but apart from maybe the watch, nothing I'd use. I mainly wear minimal trail shoes and the thinnest socks I can find. I'd run without socks if it didn't make my shoes so smelly!
I've just posted my medals piece, based on your idea, if you'd like to check it out in my Blog.
    Cheers!

    1. Perhaps with all the cushioning I'm using (in both the shoes and the socks) it's my running form that actually needs a bit of attention...! :)

Can't wait to read your medal post - headed over there now!

  5. I simply love all of Nike's running clothes. I often leave home only decked out in Nike products, except for the Falke socks of course, oh and my Garmin :)

    1. My feet just don't do well in Nike shoes, but other than that I'm a big fan. Interestingly enough, a friend of mine loves her Nike shoes and can't run in Asics! Interesting how we all differ :) .

  6. I think I'll do a similar post at some stage. I'm old fashioned in some ways and high tech in other ways while running. I'm a Nike runner and prefer cotton shirts. I just don't like the feel of the tech shirts. Luckily I have hundreds of race cotton t-shirts still unopened in my cupboard. :)

    1. I must say that I agree with you on the feel of most tech shirts. That's one of the reasons why I love First Ascent's DuoFlo - it's a cotton-tech combination with a cotton feel, but wicking properties. The best of both worlds :) !

  7. I love my Oiselle Roga's. They are my absolute favorite running shorts!!! I have also started Injinji toe socks because they provide very good protection against blisters and for some reason I am extremely blister prone.

    1. Hi Madison! I've heard so much about Oiselle's gear, but unfortunately we don't get it here in S.A. :( . I'd love to try it someday, though!
