The more races I run, the more I realize that for me the most memorable races are not the ones where I've PR'ed or gotten the biggest medals (although those are nice too!). The most memorable races for me are the ones that I run with friends and family - the ones where we laugh and chat and jointly suffer our way to the finish line.
One such race, which I unfortunately have no picture of (I wish I did!), took place in December 2003. It was a 5 k race in Jeffrey's Bay, which I did with my dad (the first and only race that we ever ran together - my dad had to stop running because of an old rugby injury). I remember our nervous chatter and giggling at the starting line; us "checking out the competition" and deciding who we were going to beat (we were so wrong with our predictions!); getting stuck behind a race walker that we just couldn't manage to pass (and we were running, ahem...); and laughing so hard that I felt like I couldn't give one more step. One of my favourite running memories by far.

Another one of my all time favourite races took place in 2006. It was an X-Terra off-road race (i.e. there was no trail. Nada.) at the Gariep Dam that I did with two of my best friends. We were in way over our heads - we formed part of a huge field of about 15 (yes, fifteen) runners and literally stumbled, tripped, huffed, puffed and laughed our way over boulders and through fields of Mexican Poppies and pools of mud, all under the watchful eye of a camera crew (noooo!) and a bunch of spectators. It was definitely not a pretty sight, but we had a ball! We still giggle about the experience today.
Last week I added to my list of all time favourite running memories - you can read the full story here. I tackled a 10 kay race with my little girl and it was such a special morning. I didn't even notice the race photographer, but she managed to capture one of my favourite memories ever on film just before we crossed the finish line - my all time favourite race pic.

Now if only I can get Will to run a race with me (nudge, nudge; wink, wink) - that would definitely also be one for the books!
