Race Report: Castle Light Trail Running League - Leg 3

This past Saturday we woke up to a chilly, windy August morning.  For a brief second after  waking up I considered staying at home and getting some more sleep, but Baby Girl had slept so well the previous night that I really had no excuse not to get up and go and race.  And I'm so glad I did.

We (Will, Baby Girl and I) huddled into the car and arrived at the race with only minutes to spare before the race start (why do I feel like this is becoming our characteristic strategy when traveling as a pack?).  Thankfully we were just in time for the pre-race briefing, which contained no ominous forebodings this time and, after the blow of a whistle, we were off.

Fellow runners standing around in the freezing wind before the race start.  We opted for huddling in the car instead.

The race route wound its way through sections of the Tempe Military Base and was challenging, yet fun: It contained a nice mixture of hills (no monsters this time), gravel roads, single track, reed beds, rocks, water streams and grass fields.  The race once again consisted of two laps (measuring approximately 5.7 km each) of the same route, but this time we were informed that the first lap would be regarded as a race in its own right for those who preferred a shorter distance.  I was so thankful for this unexpected option, seeing that I underwent a small operation on Thursday and I knew that the shorter distance would be the wiser choice for me on the day.

Making our way through the reed bed.

The route profile.

I felt great during the entire race and realized post-race that trail running is fast becoming my (and especially my knees'!) favourite form of running.  The scenery, the soft surfaces, the fresh air - what's not to love?!  (My post-race exuberance was briefly disturbed by a twenty-something guy calling me Tannie at the finish line - a respectful way of addressing oldish women in the Afrikaans language - aiyaiyai!  The exuberance soon returned, though.)

Loving it!

The next leg of the Caste Light Trail Running League will be held on 14 September 2012 and will be a night run - I'm extremely excited and absolutely terrified already!

Post-race with Baby Girl.

  1. Great job! You look so strong and happy. Love it! :)

  2. Looking at all your smiles it was for sure a beautiful race.
I would like to run through a route like that.
    Good luck on sept. 14th.

I love hearing from you!
