We (provisionally) made it!

On 11/11/11, after the first count of thousands upon thousands of votes received from all over the world, Table Mountain was officially announced as one of the (provisional) New Seven Wonders of Nature - wooooot!  (Votes are currently checked, validated and independently verified, where-after the official inauguration ceremonies will be held early 2012.)

Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa.

Some call it a scam whereby an unnamed company pocketed millions from the texting of votes (in SA the cost of one vote was R2).  Who knows?  But what I do know for certain, however, is that South Africans from all walks of life pitched in and worked together to text, tweet, post, vote and spread the word to get our Table Mountain under the Top Seven.  Which it now is - awesome!  Plus the mountain remains absolutely gorgeous, Seven Wonder status or not - no?

Personally, being the total running and travelling nerd that I am, this new status of Table Mountain just acts as an extra incentive for me to go on and run the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon (I'll probably do the half).  This ultra-marathon (which is hosted annually over the Easter Weekend along with the half, a trail run, some fun runs and an international friendship run), takes runners along some of the most breath-taking (ahem, pardon the pun) scenery along Cape Point - you'll quickly see why it's referred to as one of the world's most beautiful races.  Plus, wouldn't it be awesome to complete a race with one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world as a back drop?!

  1. I agree, the Table Mountain is a real wonder .... and another wonder is the SA rugby team (even if it was unlucky in the last Rugby World Cup).
The 2 Oceans Marathon sounds amazing.
