Fat Feet Anonymous

Hi, I'm Karien and I have one fat foot...

Three years ago, after a long and tedious search, I found my running shoe match made in heaven: The Asics Gel Nimbus.  We went together like a hand and a glove - it was perfect.  Over the span of three years I worked my way through three amazing pairs (the Nimbus 10, 11 and 12) and even ran my first marathon in the 11s - things were just peachy.

Perfection.  For a while.
Lately, however, (it's actually been a while, but I guess I hoped it would disappear if I ignored it), I've been noticing a little something bothersome down there while I ran.  It kinda feels as if my left foot is "squashed together" when I run; almost like the little foot bones are clicking over each other.  Not.  Good.  At first I thought my 11s must be worn out (they're a year old), but then I started feeling exactly the same thing with the 12s.  The almost brand new 12s.  Damn.

So, reluctantly I hit the shops (shop, actually: there is only one shop in Kathu stocking running shoes) this weekend in search of a new solemate.  One that would not judge and accept my fat little left foot just the way it was.  I tried out every single neutral running shoe in the shop.  And almost all of them felt too narrow.  And then I had a revelation: I need a wide shoe!  (Rocket science, I know.)

Enter the Nike Dart 8 (I know there's a Dart 9 out already, but things tend to be a bit on the slow side down here in Africa...).  Extra wide, just the way my left foot likes it.  Man, it was love at first fit.  I must have walked and jogged at least eight laps around the shop (and the sweet attendant didn't even roll his eyes once).  And each lap felt better and better.  So comfy.  My leftie has (finally) found its happy place.

The Darts: Love at first fit.

Code word WIDE.
Needless to say, the Darts are so sharing my pillow tonight.  And tomorrow we'll hit the roads together for the very first time.  Happy times, baby!

  2. Glad you have found the right shoes. I have problems too and it's difficult for me to get a pair of shoes that fit. For this reason when I am so lucky to buy the right item I, immediately, order other 2 pair of shoes.
At the moment the Asics Gel Cumulus.
