Virtual 5k for Autism

Living in a town with a grand total of one (yes, one) road race on its annual running calendar, it's no secret that I love virtual races!  Even more so if they're for a good cause, which is exactly why I couldn't wait to get involved with Alicia Runs' Virtual 5k for Autism.

Alicia is using this race as a means to raise funds for the Train4Autism initiative that she supports.  And, since, she's still short of her fundraising goals at the moment, this is your chance to also jump in and help her support this worthy cause!  The race closes on 10 June 2011, so there's still lots of time to get those running shoes on and run a 5 k.

I did my 5k for Autism this past Sunday morning at the Rooifontein game farm near Kimberley.  It was a freezing morning (in African terms, wink), but the thought of being a part of Alicia's initiative, and, of course, taking my brand new RunLove compression socks for a spin, finally got me out the door.

With my race bib in my happy place!

Braving the cold was so worth it - the sunrise was spectacular and, just around the first bend, a large herd of Springbok antelope crossed the road right in front of me, prancing beautifully!  I tried to get a picture, but after stopping, switching on the camera, zooming in and out, focusing and finally pressing the button, they were already pretty far away.  If, however, you squint just right and use a bit of imagination, you might be able to spot some of them in the centre left of this masterpiece...

Springbok antelope.  I promise.

After five kays, I stopped the clock at exactly 27:01:14 - my official race time!

Thanks, Alicia, for your super fun idea - it was awesome to be a part of it!  May your fundraising goals be exceeded way beyond your wildest expectations!
