Moving the Goalposts

I've decided not to run Comrades this year.  Disappointing, I know, but I'm just not ready - neither physically, nor mentally.  My training for the Paris Marathon confirmed something I've suspected for a long time: I'm more of a fartlek'ing, hill-repeating, stair-running, tempo training kind of girl; and not so much an ultra-running, (very) slow (very) long distance (very often) kind of girl.  Never say never, but for now I'd rather stick to and improve my times for halves and fulls.

With that said, I've started pondering a new goal - one I can work on instead of Comrades.  Most of you will know by now that I love (okay, more like thrive on) travelling to run, which lead me to investigate some more international marathons I'd love to do...  After much thought and deliberation, I've narrowed it down to the following:

  • The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon in Scotland (that scenery...!);
  • The Jerusalem Marathon in Jerusalem;
  • The Great Wall Marathon in China;
  • The Siberian Marathon in Russia; and
  • The Dubai Marathon in Dubai.
Any thoughts or suggestions from your side?  Has anyone done any of these races or can anyone recommend any of them?

PS: Being another public holiday here in SA, I kicked the day off with some stair running repeats at a local rugby field.  Loved it - what an awesome way to start the week!

Nothing like starting a new job with aching legs...

  1. So excited to see you're from SA--I was born there (Somerset West) but moved away when I was 5. I have to say of these marathons I can see China being perfect for you. I have several friends who ran it and said it was so tough because of the up and down terrain of the walls. And it looks like you enjoy stairs!!

  2. Hi Vanessa! Thanks for stopping by! So nice to meet a fellow South African (by birth, in your case!) blogger. China does sound amazing - I'm sure it will be the adventure of a lifetime! Love your blog, by the way!
