Fast, Faster, PR!

I've recently been informed that, in the construction business that I'm now a part of, leave should preferably only be taken during construction "down times", i.e. over the Christmas period.  On the up side this is great: A nice break at the end of the year; starting the new year well rested and refreshed; etc.  On the down side, however, this really messes up my plans for running some bucket-list international marathons during my leave periods.  Let's just say that the number of big international races taking place over the Christmas holidays are very limited - bummer.  (Any nice ones that you know of?)

In the mean time I've discovered that my tiny little new town hosts its very own race every year!  (Yup, only one.  Hey, come on, it's better than nothing!)  So, until I discover a wonderful Christmas marathon in an exotic location somewhere, this will at least give me something to focus on and work for in the interim.

"The Race" (a half-marathon) will be held on 8 October 2011, giving me just enough time to properly prepare.  Sticking with my goals of constantly challenging myself in 2011 (read about it here) and improving my current half-marathon PR of 1:59:27 (read about it here), I've started with the FIRST Half Marathon Training Programme today.  This programme basically consists of three quality runs per week, plus two cross training workouts - all focused on making you fast.  Perfect!

Today's workout (10 minute warm-up; 12 x 400 m intervals with 60 sec rest in between; plus a 10 minute cool-down) was just what the doctor ordered: How satisfying to once again be digging deep with a goal in mind!  I'll keep you updated!

  3. Good luck with your training plan! And way to go on those 12x400's. That is a lot of repeats =)

  4. Thanks for commenting on my blog! I am so excited to follow you! The only marathon I can think of around Christmas is the Vegas one if you could make it there for that!

I am loving this whole idea of 3 quality runs + mixing it up with cross-training. I think I may give that whole strategy a try for my next marathon :)

    Awesome speed workout!
