Virtual Races

Last Thursday (Thanksgiving Day in the US), I ran my very first virtual race - what fun!!  [Especially for a race deprived small town girl like myself :) .]  The "Feed the Turkey 5k" was hosted by the folks at http://www.dailymile.com/ , who donated 100% of the proceeds to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

How does it work?  You register, pay your entryfee online and then, on the day of the race, run the given distance right there where you are in the world.  All by yourself.  After completion of the "race", all registered entrants log their finishing times online and your time is compared to that of your fellow racers around the globe to give you your race placing.  Plus, you get a nifty downloadable finisher's certificate to prove that you've done it!  Neat!

What a fun and simple concept - I'm surprised there are so few virtual races around!  Also check out the following website: http://worldwidefestivalofraces.com/race/home .  Go on and try one - you'll love it!
