Favourite Fuels

One of the most appealing benefits of running, in my opinion, is the fact that it requires fuel.  And lots of it.  (Okay, okay, let's not get carried away here.  Yes, runners also fight the never ending battle of the bulge.  And no, we can't scoff down whatever we like whenever we feel like it.)  Unlike models, beauty queens and other like-minded Twiggies, however, runners view carbohydrates as an essential food group, not a swear word.  Man, we love carbs.  And we're proud of it.

Enter the humble dish of Spaghetti Bolognaise.  Can any meal be more perfect?  The mere thought of that steamy bowl of (wholewheat) pasta, drenched in a meaty, tomato-y sauce, topped with grated white cheese makes my mouth water...  Comfort food, rocket fuel and a nifty one-pot solution to covering every food group in a single meal.  Pure genius.

Then, of course, there's peanut butter.  Can someone please give the man who invented this masterpiece the Nobel prize he deserves?!  Spread nice and thickly on a sarmie; blended into a smoothie; or simply by the spoonful - you just can't go wrong with good old PB.  Runners everywhere would be lost without it.

Last, but definitely not least, there's chocolate.  Mmmmmm...  In moderation, chocolate - in my opinion - firmly occupies its very own, well deserved spot as an essential food group.  Right up there with carbs, protein and the like.  Not ingesting it at least once a month can have serious repercussions for your general well-being - so be warned.  Eat your chocolate!
